CARMEN
In a small Mediterranean village in Malta, Carmen (Natascha McElhone) has looked after her brother, the local priest, for her entire life. When the Church abandons Carmen and she is mistaken for the new priest, Carmen begins to see the world, and herself, in a new light.

Buhagiar began her career as an actress during the Toronto New Wave starring in films like the international hits Roadkill and Highway 61. Her first outing as a writer-director was the short film The Passion of Rita Camilleri that was in competition in Locarno, won a Best Short award at the Chicago International Film Festival and several other international awards. Her two previous features are 2014’s The Anniversary and 2018’s It’s Hard To Be Human have both won several awards and have worldwide distribution. She has been honoured for her work with a retrospective at Karlovy Vary. Carmen is Buhagiar’s 3rd feature film as both screenwriter and director.

Pierre Ellul is a creative producer who setup Falkun Films in Malta in 2007 to bring thought provoking and moving stories to the screen. Pierre started his career in film 21 years ago as an assistant director and has worked in the directorial teams of Ridley Scott, Alfonso Cuaron and Steven Spielberg. In 2006 he was nominated for a Directors Guild of America award for the film Munich as part of Spielberg’s directorial team. Other selected credits in a production capacity include Oscar-nominated Kon-Tiki (2011), the successful Danish film All Inclusive (2013) and The Promise (2015). He wrote, directed and produced the feature documentary Dear Dom (2011), about one of Malta’s most controversial prime-ministers; He is Executive Producer on the Sundance 2021 award winning film Luzzu. Pierre is an EAVE alumni and is the Malta national co-ordinator for EAVE. He is also an Executive Committee member of the Malta Producers Association and an European Film Academy voting member.

Coral Aiken is a creative producer based in Toronto, Canada. She founded Aiken Heart Films in 2014 to champion unique talents, and connect with an engaged audience. Coral has produced three feature films, and many shorts. Her films have screened in competition at Cannes Cinéfondation, TIFF, Sarajevo, Seattle, Buenos Aires, in the Locarno Academy, and on Nowness.com. Coral studied as a director at York University, MFA and at Berlinale Talents. She is an alumna of TIFF Studio, and EAVE. Coral teaches at LIFT, York University and the Canadian Film Centre.
Coral recently collaborated with Jackie Batsinduka to create Skillin' It (2020), a digital series of intimate conversations between Canadian film industry professionals, which also highlights emerging talent in Jackie's Corner. Coral’s latest short film Succor premiered at TIFF 2020, a feature adaptation is in development with writer director Hannah Cheesman. Carmen is Coral’s most recent feature and her first international co-production.

Anika Psaila Savona is a producer and was involved in the setting up of Falkun Films in 2007, a production company based in Malta. She has a legal background, graduating as a lawyer from Malta and then went on to read for a Masters at the University of Oxford. For fifteen years, Anika worked internationally in the corporate world. She held manage-rial positions in South Africa, was Director of Legal for an international hotel chain, and then moved into film production. With Falkun Films she’s worked in different capacities in production. Anika is the in-house legal advisor and projects she’s worked on include, amongst others, the Oscar-nominated KonTiki, American Assassin, Renegades and The Promise. Anika was the executive producer on Dear Dom. She is currently producing and co-producing other projects.
